The Aa and Maas Water Board and the Municipality of Laarbeek are working together on the Blue Portal Laarbeek project. They use the regional and local water storage task for an integrated area development with innovative solutions for water management and a strong appearance.

The report drafted by Vista is the jointly supported ‘Water Portal Laarbeek Area Vision’, which forms the basis for a further development plan.

With the storage, we prevent flooding in the area by absorbing it in times of heavy rainfall. Water is retained in the water sector, so that it is available to farmers in the event of drought. The water storage is arranged in such a way that flowery grassland develops well and that meadow birds and the “European weatherfish” (protected species of fish) feel at home.

The bicycle and hiking trails and the lookout tower along the water storage and holding facilities were also completed at the end of 2018.

In 2016 we formulated an integrated area vision together with working groups. We presented these to those involved in the area. The draft project plan was approved in 2017 and we started implementation in April 2018. The water storage and storage facilities were completed at the end of 2018 and opened on 8 December 2018.
